La Gerla was created in 1976 when Sergio Rossi bought the then Podere Colombaio Santi estate from the Biondi Santi family.
Located in the Canalicchio area north of Montalcino, one of the region’s best and original growing areas. Situated at 320m above sea level with northeast and east exposures, and cooling temperatures, all leading to a longer growing season. This, and the soils composed of marl, limestone and silt, yields wines with exquisite aromas, elegance and complexity. Here, in the top vintages, they make the Brunello Riserva Gli Angeli from the vineyard of the same name planted in 1965 by Tancredi and Franco Biondi Santi.
Rossi also realized the great potential of Castelnuovo dell’Abate in the southeastern part of the DO, and in 1992, he acquired and planted his first vineyard there and in 1997 planted two more parcels, including the La Pieve vineyard.
“The two areas are completely different. La Gerla’s vineyards in Canalicchio have fresh northeast and east exposures and the soils are mostly marl and silt, and produce wines with pronounced aromas and elegance. The soils in Castelnuovo dell’Abate have a sandy-silty texture and are rocky, with a substantial amount of limestone. The vineyards are very protected from the cold northern winds, so ripening is excellent, and these grapes yield more intensity and structure,” says Alberto Passeri, agronomist and estate manager of La Gerla, who has worked at La Gerla since 1999.
The La Pieve vineyard, located 350m above sea level near an old alabaster quarry, produces wines with remarkable intensity, structure and weightless concentration. Noticing the unique qualities of the grapes from this site, since the 2017 vintage, the firm has made a single-vineyard Brunello La Pieve.
The extraordinary 2021 La Pieve garnered one of the Italian specialist, Kerin O'Keefe, rare 100 points when she declared it her top wine of 2025.
