Grape: 100% Chardonnay
Cardellino means Gold Finch in Italian and there’s a little legend that the Cardellino only nests in the vines of the Chardonnay grape. This was Elena Walch’s first wine and she duly named it after the ever present Cadellinos. The wine itself is a testament to the terroir and climate of the Alto Adige in the Southern Tyrol with its crisp, fresh style. Handpicked, the wine spends several months on its lees, with 15% of it being aged in French oak for 6 months. The result is a racy mouth feel, with minerality and texture. It’s reminiscent of quality Chablis but with its own personality that’s a tad richer, a little juicer and there’s a long, engaging finish that merits taking your time to savour it. This is a gorgeous Chardonnay and genuinely good value.
Pairs well with smoked salmon or smoked chicken.
