Spoke 'Amped' Chardonnay, Isabel Vineyard, Marlborough, New Zealand 2022
Chardonnay
Amped Chardonnay hails from the organic Isabel vineyard and sees much of the same treatments as its siblings, whole bunch pressed and wild yeast fermentation, plus, on this occasion, barrel fermentation. The oak's presence is subtle though and there's definitely a parallel with Burgundy's Pouilly Fuisse.
It's dry but it's beautifully balanced too, with a rich, textured mouthfeel. Aromatic, with yellow apple and stone fruits and a touch of almonds on the nose. The minerality carries through to give it a deliciously long finish with lovely apple and citrus fruit. If this was a Burgundy you'd be edging the decimal point a little to the right...
Try it with good fish, seafood pasta or risotto, some Brie de Meaux or Wicklow Blue.
