Rocca di Montegrossi ‘San Marcellino’ 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG, Italy
95% Sangiovese, 5% Pugbitello.
Rocca di Montegrossi is steeped in history, dating back as far as the 7th Century and family of Marco Ricasoli, the winery’s owner, played a central role in the creation of the Chianti region and of Chianti Classico.
Needless to say, they only produce their Gran Selezione from their best grapes and in the greatest of vintages, of wine 2016 was definitely one. The winey has been organic since 2006 and they harvest by hand. There’s a small helping of Pugbitello, about 5%, which is an old Tuscan grape variety. The wines spends 24 months in barrel and another in bottle. It’s bottled unfitered.
This is a phenomenal opportunity to get your hands on some truly excellent Chianti, one that will give you another decade of pleasure.
Pairs well steak and other red meats.
“Vigna San Marcellino is both youthfully fresh and maturely complex. It includes a healthy dose of the deeply coloured Pugnitello grape, and both this and the Sangiovese saw long post-fermentation macerations of over 30 days in 2016. Liquorice, tarragon and broom interlace with exuberant plum and understated toasted nuances that are seductive. Laden with black cherry and rich, velvety tannins, the palate is creamy in texture, while underlying chalkiness and saline minerality lend energy, leading to a sappy, refreshing finish.”
