Arpepe 'Ultimi Raggi' Valtellina Superiore Sassella Riserva, Italy 2016
The Ultimi Raggi (meaning Last Rays) is a late-harvested Nebbiolo where the grapes undergo a light and natural drying process, due to the Alpine winds, while still attached to the vines. The later harvesting, before the snows in mind November, thickens the skins and concentrates the sugars, creating the most full-bodied and structured offering in the winery’s line-up. It has a naturally high acidity that comes, in part, from the plots 600 meter altitude, right up at the highest reaches of the Sassella subzone, in an area called Ere. Think Morello cherries, prunes and licorice, accompanied by firm, close-grained tannins that grip through to a long, beguiling finish.
"Aromas of graphite, game, earth, red cherries and dark berries. Dense palate with dusty yet ripe tannins, refreshing acidity and a medium to full body. A lot of good substance that still needs time to integrate and gain complexity. Drinkable now, but best from 2026." 95 JamesSuckling.com July 2024
"A lively, graceful red, well-spiced and aromatic, with a skein of incense and potpourri notes winding through cherry and berry fruit flavors. Reveals a savory push of loamy earth, mineral and brambly herbs on the plush finish." 92 Wine Spectator March 2024
