A Capilla comes from the Falcoeira vineyard in Santa Cruz, Ladeiras do Biei, which sits about half a kilometre above sea level, on steep granite terraced slopes. A blend of organic, old vine Mencía, Brancellao, Sousón and Garnacha, plus some other indigenous grapes. Crushed, dusty red berries, dried mint and aniseed on the nose. Rich red fruits, mineral, saline notes and long finish.
'The nose of the 2020 Falcoeira A Capilla comes through as the ripest of the reds from 2020, despite being bottled at 13.5% alcohol. It has notes of ripe berries and a touch of soy sauce, a touch of iodine and a juicy and tasty palate, rich with deep flavors, and a long-lasting finish. It fermented in a 3,000-liter oak vat and matured in a 2,000-liter oak foudre. 2,664 bottles were filled in July 2022.' Robert Parker 93+/100 Drink 2023-2028.
To many, Telmo Rodriguez, who, along with his sister Amaia, runs the impressive Remelluri winery in Rioja, needs no introduction but it's his partnership with fellow winemaker, Pablo Egnziza that has created the exciting range of wines that come together under the umbrella of Telmo Rodriguez Wines. The two have have spent the past thirty years reclaiming abandoned vineyards of indigenous grapes, across a number of regions. Together they are working with over 350 separate small plots, totalling 80 hectares and 43 different varieties of native grapes.
