The highly acclaimed By Farr winery was started in 1994 by Gary and Robyn Farr in Moorabool Valley, in the cool climate Geelong region of Victoria (where they also run horses and cattle). Gary had already gained much experience and inspiration when working with the likes of Domaine Dujac in Burgundy and he was hailed by the Australian wine critic Len Evans as being the maker of "Australia's best pinot".
Today Gary and Robyn's son and daughter-in-law, Nick and Cassie, run the By Farr winery, alongside their own label Farr Rising. Nick has also spent time at Domaine Dujac and that love of Pinot Noir and terroir is expressed in the wines that the family make. “The wines we make are not mainstream—they are expressions of our vineyard, our land and what we like to drink. That is what we promise to deliver.” Nick Farr. By Farr was the Australian Winery of the Year 2025 with The Real Review, the second time in four years. The Real Review recognized the Farr family as being "true vignerons" who are "at the top of their game. "The wines that secured the title for By Farr were the "statuesque 2022 vintage of Cote Vineyard RP Pinot Noir, the stunningly beautiful 2023 Cote Vineyard GC Chardonnay, the opulent 2022 Tout Prés Pinot Noir, and the gorgeously spicy 2022 By Farr Shiraz."
Tout Prés by Farr, Pinot Noir, Geelong, 2022
Tout Prés was planted in 2001 and is a very special and intriguing site. It rises above the other vineyards, and each of the three slopes consists of a different soil type. The largest slope is black volcanic soil over limestone; the second is quartz gravel mixed with red ironstone; the third is an iron strand in grey sandy loam. The clones, which will acclimatise and mutate over time to become the ‘Tout Prés clone’, are 113, 114, 115, 667, 777 and MV6.
With 7300 vines per ha, Tout Pres is a densely planted vineyard on the estate—hence its name, which translates as “very cosy”. This land is a challenge to farm, but well worth the effort. The soils and close competition force the vines to work hard, with the result being fruit that is lush but masculine, and which provides the coveted structure found only in the most age-worthy wines.
