Conti Marone Cinzano 'Lot 1' 2019 Brunello di Montalcino

Coming from Santiago Marone-Cinzano who, along with his father Francesco, molded Col d'Orcia into the steller estate that it is today, is the "itinerant Cru selection" that is Conti Marone Cinzano Lot 1. 2019 Brunello di Montalcino. This is the wines inaugural vintage, and it's arrived in style! (The inclusion of the Cinzano name is a homage to his father and their family history.)

In the 70's Francesco had championed the idea of site specific vineyards, Crus, to show just how glorious Sangiovese could be, with Poggio al Vento and Vigna Nastagio being the results. An innovative idea at the time.

Now Santigo is bringing that innovation full circle by using micro parcels as the source of grapes. With the significant challenges of climate fluctuation, hotter, colder, wetter, drier, there's a need for flexibility that can't always be found by relying on the 'Crus'. Room to maneuver so to speak. Each year it is the weather that dictates the source of the grapes, for example in a drier year the grapes will come from Nastagio, where the soils are richer and the aspect north-east facing. In a wetter vintage the Poggio al Vento's sandier, better draining soils and south-southwest exposure will be the source. The team will select the best grapes from the chosen plot. As Santigo says “The climate has become so unpredictable that you can no longer rely on fixed crus.”

Santigo is seeking a "stylistic consistency" by adapting to each vintages' obstacles, a style which he describes as being "a rounder softer style, higher aromatic complexity, and skins thin enough to favor perfume over power". Given the 'single-vineyard' expression of his father, the idea of the 'cru' having been the 'identity' isn't lost on Santigo. “Of course, there’s a tradeoff. I sacrifice a little terroir character for stylistic consistency,” he admits. “But ultimately, I’m pursuing the highest quality, not dogma. It’s about clarity, not repetition.”

(Quotes from an article by Anthony Rose, writing for The World of Fine Wine https://tinyurl.com/Santigos-Lot-One)

"Deepish color, with striking Sangiovese typicity of aroma, it shows fragrant, cedary notes, quintessence of Sangiovese, with herb and cherry. There’s an ultra-polished, silky textural quality, ripe cherry-fruit sweetness laced with spice, seducing the palate with rounded tannins and yet, at the same time, incisive damsony acidity for a delicate texture. A certain grip balances out the fine finish." 93 Anthony Rose. The World of Fine Wine Dec 2025

"Marking its inaugural release, the Conti Marone Cinzano 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Lot. 1 is a charming wine that opens to bright primary tones of summer cherry and redcurrant. Santiago Marone Cinzano tells me that careful work was executed to soften the tannins thanks to three years maturation in Allier oak botte followed by one and a half years in bottle. This resulted in what is stated as an "above 45% polymerization of the tannins." I concur that they are indeed velvety or even silky in texture; they move with glossy intensity. However, the quality of the bright fruit is what I find most attractive. Sangiovese grapes are specially selected from across the Col d'Orcia estate (resulting in just 9,944 bottles), and the configuration of the blend will probably change each year. Santiago describes it as an "itinerant blend." Especially aromatic clusters are chosen and destemmed, and maceration times are a bit shorter in order to stay within the red and purple fruit spectrum. Cap management is very delicate with pump-overs. Lot. 1 drinks beautifully straight out of the gate, but you could safely hold this bottle for the next 10 to 15 years if desired." 96 Robert Parker

"This is round and expressive, exhibiting cherry, strawberry, flinty mineral and orange peel flavors. Refined and tense tannins offer lift, while the harmony and lively acidity keep this focused and long. Best from 2027 through 2042." 93 Wine Spectator

"This is an ambitious wine with aromas of ripe red cherries, strawberry candy, fresh violets, roses and a hint of nuts. Filigreed on the palate, with ripe tannins, tight-knit acidity and a fresh, medium to full body with cherry stones in the slightly chalky finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."95 James Suckling

"Lustrous deep ruby. A stunning, deep, focused nose of pure cherry and raspberry and with hints of cardamom pod and garden herbs. Keeps on developing in the glass. Vibrant acidity and great purity of red fruit and firm but perfectly matching tannins. Col d’Orcia 2.0 and a truly impressive effort." 17.5 Jancis Robinson

"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Lot 1 wafts up with a dramatic perfume that blends bright cherries, dried flowers, lavender and sage, all complicated by hints of rosemary. Despite its depth and power, this is wickedly fresh. Riveting acidity offsets soothing soft textures as ripe red berry fruits give way to blood orange and spice. The 2019 finishes long, potent and gently tannic with a sweet, silky blend of tart cranberry, crisp mineral tones and inner rose. This is the first vintage of Lot 1, and the potential is very high." 96 Vinous

"Bright, luminous ruby red colour with a shiny core. Pithy nose of rich cherry, cold smoke, leather, reminiscent of blood orange, cinchona bark and a hint of rosemary, with fine earthy tones and cranberries on the finish. On the palate, beautifully texture, full-bodied, with creamy, fine-meshed tannins, opens heartily, spans a wide arc, lingers for a very long time." 98 Falstaff
