Ottin 'Non Expedit' Syrah, Vallée d'Aoste, Italy, 2023
100% Syrah
A beautifully expressive high-altitude Syrah, from Italy’s tiny Vallée d’Aoste in the North-West of Italy, above Alto-Piemonte, with Mont Blanc to the left and the Matterhorn off to the right.
Crafted by Elio Ottin, and his son Nicolas, on their self-sustaining vineyard (and farm), grown at around 700 metres on south facing slopes. Fermented with 25% whole bunches and aged for a year in large French oak, it combines the depth of Syrah with a lovely Alpine freshness and lift.
Soft and aromatic, with violet, rose and spice, followed by savoury notes of black olive, herbs and oregano. Fresh and elegant rather than heavy, with plenty of structure, depth and a long, balanced finish. Gorgeous!
Pairs well with roast or grilled meats, game, hearty stews and aged cheeses.
