Welcome to the Alto Piemonte, Boca to be exact, Piedmont's highest (400-450mtrs above sea level) and most easterly wine-growing region and once considered the most progressive wine-growing region in Italy and the historic home of Nebbiolo.
In 1998 Christoph Kunzli took over Le Piane and it's 80-100 year old vines, which were planted according to the 'Maggiorina' system whereby four vines are clustered together to form what looks like a square. The vines are planted on ancient volcanic soils which, a long with the cool climate and elevation, helps create wines that are both elegant and rich.
Le Piane's Nebbiolo from the Colle Novaresi, mostly Nebbiolo with some Vespolina, is made to enjoy. Nicely structured with soft tannins and delightfully sweet red berries that keep it crisp and velvety and very easy drinking.
