Arpepe 'Rocce Rosse' Valtellina Sassella Superiore Riserva, Italy, 2009
This is a powerful, dense wine (by Arpepe standards). Like most of their wines, this is beguiling, with smoke, dark spice, lavender and star anise on the nose. There's a richness and structure that reflects the granite terraces, the hard working vines, the 40 day maceration and 5 years of aging in barrel, concrete vats and eventually bottles. A triumph.
