Founded by John Duval in 2003, John Duval Wines has established itself as one of the Barossa Valley's respected producers. John previously spent many years as Chief Winemaker at Penfolds, where he worked on some of Australia's most celebrated wines, including Grange. His own wines reflect a more individual expression of the Barossa, with a particular focus on old-vine fruit and the character of its traditional Rhône varieties.
Plexus is a carefully assembled blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre, sourced from vineyards across different parts of the Barossa. The 2022 vintage comprises 43% Shiraz, 41% Grenache and 16% Mourvèdre. Each variety contributes something different: Shiraz brings richness and dark fruit, Grenache adds lifted red-fruit character and aromatic spice, while Mourvèdre provides savoury complexity, structure and firm tannins.
The nose is expressive, with aromas of dark plum, black cherry and lifted floral notes. On the palate, generous layers of boysenberry and dark cherry are complemented by hints of chocolate, roasted spice and subtle oak. Smooth and velvety in texture, with fine, grainy tannins and a beautifully balanced finish, this is a wine with both richness and elegance.
A wonderful example of modern Barossa winemaking, bringing together three classic varieties to create a wine with depth, generosity and complexity. Particularly lovely alongside slow-cooked meats, grilled lamb and richer dishes.
