We’d like to introduce you to Bodegas Tobia, an outstanding Rioja producer which is new and exclusive to us, and one we are very excited about. They describe their ethos as minimalist – do as little intervention as possible in the winery to let the grapes- and terroir – speak for themselves. We’d describe them as some of the most exciting wines we’ve seen from Rioja in a long time, with the white in particular being a real surprise.

Tobia ‘Cuvee’ Tinto, Rioja, Spain

A blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha, from several vineyards which are aged between 20 – 60 years old. All of which is pretty typical of a good Rioja. Where this wine differs from the rest is that it is a blend of vintages, in this case 2019 & 2018. This practice, rarely found in these parts of Spain, enables the winemaker to produce an incredibly consistent wine, which highlights the freshness of the 2019 vintage, but adds a depth of flavour too. On the palate it’s pure raspberry fruit, juicy and vibrant, with smooth tannins and a touch of liquorice on the finish.

Tobia ‘Cuvee’ White, Rioja, Spain

Like its Tinto sibling, the Tobia Blanco is a blend of grapes, vineyards and vintages. Here, we have Viura and Tempranillo Blanco, along with a splash of Garnacha blanco and Chardonnay, from both 2019 and 2018. Initial aromas are enticingly ripe -peach, pear and pineapple, but the palate offers more freshness in the form of lemon and pithy grapefruit. Delicate use of oak comes through as subtle vanilla and cinnamon on the finish, to make this a complex yet very drinkable wine.
