Or, not so dry, in this case. Been wondering what to drink with your Christmas dinner? Try these three wines, chosen specially to see you through the day, from breakfast bubbles to post-dinner couch sipping!
Alta Alella Gran Reserva Cava, Spain 2016 – it’s Christmas (almost) so start the day with some bubbles. You could pick Champagne, but you could be smarter and choose this outstanding Gran Reserva Cava from one of the best sparkling winemakers in Spain. Crisp, elegant and very fine, its works as well with breakfast as it does with canapes, seafood & light starters.
Jonathan Didier Pabiot ‘Florilège’ Pouilly Fumé, Loire Valley, France 2018
Regarded by those in the know as the next superstar of the region. His ‘Florilège’ Pouilly Fume is a blend of many different parcels, blended together to produce an exceptional wine. Aromatic and vibrantly expressive- think citrus, gooseberry and herbal, grassy notes. The palate has lots of ripe grapefruit flavours with flinty/ smoky hints, but with surprising richness and weight. Will pair beautifully with shellfish, seafood and goats cheese.
Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz, Canberra District, Australia 2017
Founded in the early 70’s by Tim Kirk, a Co. Clare man, Clonakilla has since become one of the most important wineries in all of Australia, ushering in a new type of Shiraz- closer in style to the lighter, cooler and more savoury reds of the Northern Rhone, but with a distinctly Australian character. It is a perfect companion to roast turkey – all juicy, sweet fruit and warm Christmas spice. Goes down a treat with many a cheese too.
